April 28th Board of Education Meeting Summary

The Chatham County Board of Education held a regular session on Monday, April 28, at Virginia Cross Elementary School.

Brenda Rogers, a representative from the Chatham County Literacy Council, presented a program overview to the Board. The community program targets adults in need of help in improving their literacy. Organizers are also looking for tutors and clients. Rogers noted that twenty-two percent of adults in Chatham County read below fourth grade level. She talked about the individual, family, economic, and community impacts of literacy struggles.

Board member Deb McManus shared details from the Federal Relations Network Conference held each year in Washington, D.C. Beginning on February 3, school boards from across the nation spend three days in training about educational legislative issues and interacting with legislators.

Board members who attended the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA) conference in November gave a conference overview.

The Board approved the following fundraiser requests from schools:
• Jordan-Matthews High School – cross country team
• North Chatham School – t-shirt sale
• Northwood High School – DECA ad sale
• Northwood High School – doughnut sale
• Siler City Elementary – computer camps

Are there any plans related to Logan's arrival at CCS? I had a note that said May 6 is his first day. Does anyone know if there are receptions or school tours planned for him to get acquainted this year or is that likely to be postponed until the beginning of school in the fall?

When I was at yesterday's school board meeting in Virginia Cross, Mr. Logan was there sitting in the front row of the audience. He was taking notes and scribbling remarks as the meeting proceeded.

I did talk to Kathie Russell and she did say that he would be sitting with the board at the next meeting. They are also working on plans for an "official" welcome. I assume they have not finalized details yet.

I had a chance to talk to him very briefly after the meeting and he mentioned that his daughters were proud that their dad had made it onto YouTube.

The board will ...
