May 12th Board of Education Meeting Summary

The Chatham County Board of Education held a regular session on Monday, May 12, at the central office in Pittsboro.

The Safelle Janitorial Services Company presented its quarterly awards to Bennett School custodial staff and its employees.

Susan Little, Chief Finance Officer, presented a memo to the Board regarding a 2007–2008 Contract for Audit Services. The Board for approved a contract with the firm Dixon Hughes for the 2007–2008 fiscal year. Little presented financial statements and budget amendments that the Board approved.

Little presented a revised budget proposal for 2008–2009 for approval as well as the Superintendent’s budget message to the Board of Commissioners.

The Board approved two policy amendments: #7100 (Recruitment and Selection of Personnel) and #9210 (Care and Maintenance of Grounds and Outdoor Equipment).

Logan and the Board discussed a proposal for the 2008–2009 Board meeting calendar along with a proposed Board meeting agenda format. In essence, Logan recommended that the Board move its work sessions and its regular meetings to back-to-back weeks. The work sessions would be less formal and would involve discussion. Items agreed upon during the work session could be placed on the regular meeting agenda under a consent agenda format in order to expedite Board decisions during regular meetings. Public comment would continue to be on the regular meeting agendas. Under a “good news” portion of the regular meeting format, Logan would like to continue the Board sharing time and Superintendent’s comments, but also encourage schools at which meetings are held to attend and share good news. The Board discussed a preference for the work session to be held on the first Monday of each month and the regular session to be held on the second Monday of the month. Central office staff will complete a calendar with these preferences in mind and bring it back to the Board for approval.

The Board approved the following fundraiser requests from schools:
Chatham Middle School – drama club production
Northwood High School – Basic Life Skills class activity
Northwood High School – Little League baseball camp

Is there any central listing of all the different camps offered thru Chatham County Schools? I just saw a day or two ago the flyer for a K-5 Computer Camp. I know Dr. Carlin's Drama Camp in July has extended their registration. I see above a Little League Baseball Camp. Wouldn't some central location for all these possibilities be helpful for folks? If approval has to go thru the Central Office, is there a logical place on the website to list these & contact info?

Re: Video of November's Woods Charter School Board Meeting

I have attended many Woods school board meetings as well as many Chatham County school board meetings. Woods' meetings are no more inefficient, though they often entail much more detail about what is happening in the school (since they have 500 students v 7000+ in CCS schools).

I've been to some count...
